How to Craft an Elytra in Minecraft
The elytra is one of Minecraft’s most coveted late-game items, giving players the power to glide and fly across vast distances. This comprehensive guide explains why you can’t craft elytra, the only way to find it in the End dimension, and the best methods to repair your wings using phantom membranes or the mending enchantment. Discover essential tips for using elytra safely and efficiently, and learn fun facts about its real-world inspiration
Obtaining the Elytra
Unfortunately, there is no way to craft the elytra in Minecraft. The only way to obtain the item is to travel to the outer end islands and loot one from an End Ship. There is about a 50% chance that an End City has an End Ship. Because of this, you will get one elytra every two End Cities you find. If you’re lucky you can gather a couple of elytras in no time!
Repairing the Elytra
There are three main ways that you can repair an elytra with low durability in Minecraft.
First, if you have the mending enchantment on your elytra, you can simply gather experience points to repair the durability.
Second, you can use phantom membranes in an anvil. Phantom membranes are dropped by phantoms upon demise or can be dropped by tamed cats after skipping the night by sleeping.
Finally, you can repair an elytra by simply combining it with another elytra.
Out of all of these three methods, the first is definitely the most efficient. After a couple of repairs you will run out of elytras to combine and it will require far too much experience to combine an elytra with phantom membranes.
Using the Elytra
The elytra revolutionizes travel in Minecraft with the ability to cross gaps of thousands of blocks in no time at all. To use the elytra, simply equip it in the chestplate slot and press the space key when falling from a height. You will glide effortlessly through the air. Pair this mechanic with fireworks to fly through the air at staggering speeds!
Make sure to always keep an eye on your elytra’s durability. You can take quite a fall if your elytra breaks mid flight! Fortunately, unlike other items, you do not lose the elytra item when it breaks. Instead it turns into a broken elytra that can still be repaired with the methods above.
Fun Fact
It is no coincidence that the elytra looks very similar to a beetle’s wings. In fact, the elytra is a scientific term referring to just that: a beetle’s wings.
